Open Flame Policy
The City of Dothan prohibits all open flames, with the exception of those used for personal warming or cooking. Any other type of open flame requires a burn permit issued by the Dothan Fire Department. Burn permits can be obtained at the Fire Administration Office, located at 600 Columbia Highway.

Burn Permit Policy and Requirements

Residents within the Dothan city limits may apply for a burn permit, provided all requirements for open burning, outlined by the City of Dothan Burn Ordinance and the State of Alabama Fire Marshal’s Office, are met.

If a permit is granted, the Dothan Fire Marshal or their designee reserves the right to revoke the permit at any time if the permit holder is found to be in violation of any of the stated conditions or if any false statement or misrepresentation was made during the application process.

Liability Notice
The individual or company granted the burn permit assumes full responsibility for any loss of or damage to life or property, whether directly or indirectly resulting from the open burning.

Permit Details

  • Fee Payment  of $25: Payable to the City of Dothan by check or cash only.

  • Duration: Permits are valid for 7 days from the date of issuance. Commercial permits may be extended up to 10 days due to weather delays.

Burn Permit Conditions
The permit holder agrees to comply with the following conditions:

  1. Approved Materials Only: Burning is restricted to natural vegetation (live growth). No trash, household debris, or other unauthorized materials may be burned.

  2. Constant Supervision: The fire must be attended at all times until it is fully extinguished.

  3. Designated Burn Area: Burning must occur only in the designated area approved in the permit.

  4. Minimum Distance Requirements:

    • At least 50 feet from any residential building

    • At least 500 feet from any commercial or non-residential structures

  5. Fire Control Measures: A method of fire suppression must be readily available at the site (e.g., water hose, tractor, fire extinguishers).

  6. Wind Restrictions: Burning is not permitted when wind speeds exceed 5 mph.

  7. Permit Access: The burn permit must be available on-site during all burning activities.

  8. Commercial Signage: “Notice of Open Burn” signage is required at all commercial burn sites
